Yet, upon arrival, Vienna managed to surpass every one of our preconceived notions. We were captivated by an astonishing array of opulent palaces, a vibrant cultural tapestry, and a genuinely warm, welcoming atmosphere that made every moment a delight.

Yet, many rooms exhibit a fascinating, almost restrained decadence, beautifully reflecting the unique personalities of their former inhabitants. The palace rooms contain an impressive amount of original furniture, preventing it from feeling like a sterile museum. Instead, it cultivates the impression of a living home, albeit one with significantly more space and undeniably better furnishings than our own apartment in London!

Comprising two magnificent Baroque palaces – the Upper and Lower Belvedere – it houses an exceptional collection of Austrian art, most famously Gustav Klimt’s “The Kiss.” A crucial tip: to save yourself a considerable walk to the entrance, we recommend arriving by tram rather than the underground, making your arrival much smoother.

Nestled within the fabulous MuseumsQuartier, a vibrant cultural complex, lies a true gem for art lovers: the Leopold Museum. This outstanding institution specializes in showcasing seminal works by two of Austria’s most celebrated artists, Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt. While Klimt’s distinctive style was somewhat familiar, discovering Schiele’s powerful and influential expressionism was a spectacular revelation. This all-inclusive pass grants you access to all the sites listed here and many more, often allowing you to bypass lengthy queues – a significant advantage during peak seasons. Alternatively, we chose a Sisi Ticket, which provided convenient entry to both the Hofburg and Schönbrunn palaces, perfect for focusing on the imperial highlights.

Eating and Drinking: A Culinary Journey Through Vienna

Vienna has rightfully earned a stellar reputation for its remarkable baking, extending far beyond world-famous classics like the Sacher Torte. From delicate cakes to flaky strudels, you’ll find patisseries offering superb quality confections on every corner. Austrian bakers possess an extraordinary ability to elevate cakes beyond mere sweetness, playing with textures and maintaining perfectly balanced flavor profiles. It’s a revelation that cakes can be improved in ways you might not have imagined.

While it feels almost obligatory to try the original Sacher Torte at its birthplace, the renowned Sacher Hotel, be prepared for potentially long queues. Fear not, however – exceptional versions of this iconic chocolate cake are readily available almost everywhere across the city. We highly recommend exploring the nearby Bristol Hotel for a delightful alternative, offering a taste of this Viennese classic without the wait.

Beyond the sweets, traditional Austrian cuisine is the epitome of comfort food, with beloved classics like sausages and Wiener Schnitzel found in abundance. What truly enhances these hearty meals is the vast range of complementary condiments: an impressive selection of mustards and an array of brine-preserved vegetables – think pickles, capers, and more – which offer nuanced flavors far beyond simply adding more cheese. For an authentic street food experience, we enthusiastically recommend the legendary sausage stand Bitzinger. For a taste of traditional Austrian pub fare in a central location, a visit to Lugeck is highly advised.

Vienna is justly celebrated as a global capital of coffee culture, and every cup we savored was nothing short of exceptional. While generous packets of sugar accompany almost every order, we found that the coffee itself, or perhaps the quality of the milk used, possessed a natural sweetness that rendered additional sugar entirely unnecessary. Be aware that the price of a truly exquisite Viennese coffee can be a little steep, which meant we were perhaps slightly less caffeinated than our ideal!

It’s somewhat surprising that Austrian wines aren’t more widely exported, though one might surmise that the majority is simply enjoyed locally before it can travel further afield. Remarkably, Vienna itself boasts more vineyards than any other city on earth, with the majority dedicated to producing excellent white wines. They are typically of superb quality and, refreshingly, quite affordable – a winning combination for any wine enthusiast. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit a traditional *Heuriger*, a Viennese wine tavern, for an authentic local experience.

Given the fantastic local wine, it’s a minor shock that Austrians actually consume more beer. With crisp lager readily available on tap almost everywhere, and often priced lower than bottled water, it’s an excellent choice for anyone looking to immerse themselves in local customs. The fact that it perfectly complements traditional Austrian cuisine is surely the clincher, making a cold beer an ideal accompaniment to your meal.

Getting Around Vienna: Efficient and Enjoyable

While we usually meticulous plan every detail of our airport-to-hotel transfer, a busy schedule meant we arrived in Vienna without prior arrangements. Fortunately, Vienna makes navigation incredibly easy and stress-free. Although pre-booked taxis can be a good option (especially for groups of three or more), we found the City Airport Train (CAT) to be exceptionally convenient and excellent value. Tickets are priced at €12 per person (€21 for a return journey) and can be easily purchased from automated ticket booths or various stands in the baggage claim area or arrivals lounge. The express journey takes a mere 16 minutes, whisking you directly to Landstrasse station in the city center, with trains departing every thirty minutes.

Beyond our initial airport transfer and one solitary tram journey, we navigated Vienna exclusively on foot or using the efficient underground (U-Bahn) system. The city center is wonderfully walkable, featuring numerous charming pedestrian zones perfect for leisurely exploration. Should your feet tire or you need to cover greater distances, the underground is truly brilliant and remarkably easy to use. Trains are frequent, impeccably clean, and notably uncrowded – at least by London standards – placing you directly on the doorstep of almost every significant attraction, with Belvedere being a slight exception requiring a short walk or tram connection. For longer stays, consider a 24, 48, or 72-hour public transport pass for unlimited travel.

Where to Stay in Vienna: Finding Your Perfect Abode

While our short trip allowed us to experience just one accommodation, we are confident that Vienna, as a major European capital, offers an abundant array of fantastic places to stay, catering to every preference and budget.

Our nights were spent at the Ruby Marie, a stylish and quirky hotel conveniently located near the Westbahnhof underground station. The first hint of its unique character greeted us in the lobby: guitars available for loan, perfectly complementing the amps found in each room. Our room itself was exceptionally comfortable, boasting a superb bed and an even better shower. Breakfast was pleasant enough, though perhaps a little overpriced and occasionally lacking sufficient seating space during peak times. The hotel offers numerous other appealing features – a lovely seating area and bar, regular movie showings, and even yoga classes. However, we were so captivated by Vienna’s sights and sounds that we spent too much time out and about to fully indulge in these additional amenities.
