Behind the Lens: Unveiling the Authentic Life of a Food Blogger (Vikalinka)
For a year and a half, my blog, Vikalinka, has been a vibrant space where I share my culinary creations, styling tips, and the joy of food. During this time, many of you have grown to know the “Vikalinka” persona quite intimately. Or so I thought. Recently, a dear friend, Noemi, visited and offered a gentle, yet profound, observation: “You need to show your readers who you truly are! People yearn to see the face behind the camera, the real person crafting these delicious stories.”
Her words resonated, sparking a moment of contemplation. I realized a significant reluctance within me to fully reveal myself. Why? The answer wasn’t immediately clear. Perhaps I had become too comfortable inhabiting the curated world of Vikalinka, finding solace in its carefully constructed identity. Stepping out from behind that culinary curtain, exposing the genuine Julia, felt surprisingly daunting.
The Genesis of an Idea: A Photoshoot of a Photoshoot
It was Noemi, an incredibly gifted photographer with a keen eye for storytelling, who devised the perfect solution. Her brilliant idea? To conduct a “shoot of a shoot.” She proposed documenting my entire creative process as I prepared for a typical food blog post – from the initial setup to the final click of the camera. It was an offer I genuinely couldn’t refuse. Her proposal, much like a scene from a classic film, presented an undeniable opportunity for authenticity, though thankfully, no firearms were involved! This unique approach allowed me to shed the self-consciousness of being directly in front of the camera, instead focusing on my familiar routine while Noemi masterfully captured the raw, unscripted moments.
This “behind the scenes” peek offers a rare glimpse into the meticulous, sometimes messy, and always passionate work that goes into crafting each Vikalinka post. It’s an invitation for you, my cherished readers, to step into my world, understanding the dedication and love poured into every recipe and photograph.
Meet Julia: The Woman Behind Vikalinka
So, here it is: my name is Julia. While “Vikalinka” or “Vika” has become a beloved pseudonym for many of you, it’s worth reiterating my given name, not because it was ever a secret, but because it represents the authentic self I’m now openly sharing. Beyond the art of cooking, baking, and food styling for this blog, my life is a rich tapestry woven with various roles and passions.
My greatest joy and constant source of laughter is my husband, who also happens to be my best friend. Together, we are raising two wonderful children who fill our days with energy and wonder. A significant portion of my time is also dedicated to my professional career, a role I deeply enjoy: I am a teacher by day. This means that despite the polished appearance of my blog, our lives, yours and mine, probably have a lot more in common than you might initially think.
Balancing the Plate: A Real Look at a Food Blogger’s Life
While I do indulge in creating elaborate, fancy cakes on occasion, the reality of my daily life often calls for something far more practical. Most of the time, I’m whipping up quick, healthy, and satisfying dinners for my family. Life moves at an incredibly fast pace, and like many of you, I often find myself striving to keep up, juggling an endless list of responsibilities.
Between being a dedicated mom, a supportive wife, a passionate teacher, and a creative food blogger, it might seem as though there’s little time left for “me.” But upon deeper reflection, I realize that each of these roles, each piece of my busy life, is an integral part of who I am. They are not separate entities consuming my time, but rather facets of my identity that collectively bring immense fulfillment. I genuinely love the life I’ve built, embracing its challenges and celebrating its triumphs.
The “Exotic” Setting: My English Garden Studio
A recurring question I receive touches upon my “exotic” location, often referring to England. This always brings a smile to my face, for a couple of reasons. Firstly, after living anywhere for an extended period, the initial veneer of charm and magic often gives way to the familiar comfort of daily life. More significantly, my “exotic” location, particularly my photography studio, is far less glamorous than one might imagine.
My beloved English garden, where many of Vikalinka’s vibrant food photos are taken, is, to put it mildly, the size of a postage stamp. There’s often no room to step back when composing a shot. This delightful constraint has led me to develop some rather impressive acrobatic skills, frequently contorting my body into incredible shapes to avoid bumping into furniture, stray garden tools, or that unassuming shed lurking in the background. It’s a testament to creative problem-solving and finding beauty even in the tightest of spaces, proving that you don’t need a grand studio to produce captivating food photography.
Finding Beauty in the Prosaic: The True Vikalinka Philosophy
The truth is, the day-to-day reality of my life is often far more prosaic, less dramatically styled, than the idealized world sometimes presented on Vikalinka. However, there’s another reality, one that I consciously choose to embrace and observe daily. This reality is the incredible, ever-present beauty that surrounds us, regardless of our geographical location or circumstances.
It’s the profound beauty of God’s creation, manifested in the simplest yet most exquisite forms: the golden crust of a freshly baked loaf of bread, the creamy texture of freshly churned farmhouse butter, the intricate aroma of aged cheese, or the vibrant burst of flavor from a large cluster of juicy grapes. This profound beauty isn’t something I have to seek out; it actively surrounds me every single day, becoming an endless source of inspiration for my blog and my life.
The Power of Authenticity and Connection
It turns out, revealing the real me, Julia, wasn’t nearly as challenging as I had initially imagined. In fact, it has been an incredibly liberating experience. I sincerely hope that this glimpse into my world has allowed you to connect with me on a deeper, more personal level. There are few things I cherish more than hearing from my readers, learning about your lives, and sharing in your experiences.
So, please feel free to share a little bit about yourself in the comments below. Your stories and insights are truly invaluable to me. Thank you for taking the time to stop by, for your continued readership, and for being such an integral part of the Vikalinka community. And a truly monumental thank you goes to my extraordinary friend, Noemi, whose artistic vision and incredible talent captured these dreamy photos, making me feel, for a moment, like a true domestic goddess!
