The Air Fryer Revolution: Effortless & Healthy Cooking
Have you welcomed an air fryer into your kitchen yet? I’m usually wary of kitchen gadgets, but this one is a true game-changer. My air fryer has easily become my most cherished and frequently used appliance in recent years, and for excellent reasons. It’s not just another fad; it’s a revolutionary way to cook!
The primary appeal of an air fryer lies in its ability to deliver that satisfying “fried” texture and taste without the excessive amounts of oil traditionally required. This clever appliance works by circulating super-heated air around your food, creating a crispy exterior similar to deep frying but with significantly less fat. This means you can indulge in your favorite comfort foods, like these chicken tenders, with a fraction of the calories and zero guilt! It’s a fantastic tool for healthier eating without compromising on flavor or texture. Beyond chicken tenders, it excels at so many dishes. For example, my Air Fryer Chicken Katsu Curry is a testament to how traditional fried recipes can be reimagined into healthier, equally delicious versions.
For a long time, my go-to air fryer recipe was crispy potato fries. They were always a hit, perfectly golden and crunchy. However, that all changed the moment I discovered the unparalleled magic of making chicken tenders in it! I experimented extensively, perfecting the breading and cooking times through several trials, and I am incredibly proud to share the final recipe with you. It truly transforms ordinary chicken breasts into extraordinary tenders.
The versatility of the air fryer doesn’t stop there. You can even cook an entire roast chicken in your air fryer in as little as 40 minutes, achieving perfectly crispy skin and tender meat. Or, for a quick snack or game night treat, whip up these incredible air-fried chicken wings. The possibilities are truly endless, making it a valuable addition to any kitchen.

The Secret to the Best Air Fryer Chicken Tenders
Believe me when I tell you this: these air fryer chicken strips do not taste like a “healthified” compromise. They taste like the genuine article – the kind of chicken tenders you’d crave from your favorite restaurant, but even better because you made them at home and know exactly what went into them.
Imagine tender, succulent chicken breast strips, perfectly moist on the inside, encased in an incredibly crispy, flavorful crumb and seed coating. This coating is seasoned to perfection, offering a delightful blend of herbs and spices that elevate the humble chicken breast to something truly special. The best part? They are genuinely good for you! Stay with me, and I’ll reveal all my tips and tricks for making this culinary magic happen right in your own kitchen.
And, of course, no chicken tender experience is complete without the perfect dipping companion. This recipe comes with an easy, homemade honey mustard sauce. There’s a timeless reason why the combination of sweet honey and tangy mustard pairs so incredibly well with chicken. It’s a classic for a reason, enhancing every bite with its balanced flavors. Crafting Perfection: How to Make These Incredible Tenders
Chicken breasts are celebrated for their lean protein and nutritional value, but they aren’t always known for being inherently packed with flavor. This is where our clever coating comes into play, transforming plain chicken into something extraordinary without sacrificing its healthy attributes.
By coating the chicken in wholesome Ryvita cracker crumbs, which are then mixed with a carefully selected blend of spices and a generous sprinkle of sesame seeds, we achieve a significant boost in both taste and texture. This method ensures your chicken tenders are incredibly flavorful and satisfyingly crunchy, all while maintaining that desirable “good for you” factor. It’s a smart way to add dimension to your meal.
While I highly recommend Ryvita crackers for their unique crunch and nutritional profile, feel free to use your favorite variety of whole-grain crackers. Opting for a whole wheat cracker will further enhance the fiber content of your meal, making it even more wholesome. The key is finding a cracker that will crisp up beautifully and absorb the flavors of the seasoning blend.
Now, let’s talk about the seasoning blend – it’s crucial for flavor! You can certainly customize it to your preference, but here’s my tried-and-true combination that appeals to both kids and adults: garlic powder, salt, freshly ground black pepper, dried basil, dried oregano, and a touch of sweet paprika. This medley creates a savory, aromatic profile with a hint of warmth from the paprika that perfectly complements the chicken.
The process itself is wonderfully straightforward. First, crush your chosen crackers into fine crumbs. A food processor makes quick work of this, but placing them in a Ziploc bag and using a rolling pin works just as well – and can be quite therapeutic! Mix these crumbs thoroughly with the sesame seeds and your chosen spice blend in a shallow dish.
Next, prepare your chicken. Cut boneless, skinless chicken breasts into uniform strips for even cooking. Dip each chicken tender first into a bowl of beaten egg, ensuring it’s fully coated. The egg acts as a binder, helping the delicious crumb mixture adhere.
After the egg wash, transfer the chicken tenders to the crumb mixture, pressing gently to ensure a thick, even coating. Shake off any excess crumbs to prevent them from burning in the air fryer. Arrange the coated tenders in a single layer on the wire rack of your air fryer basket, making sure not to overcrowd it. Overcrowding can lead to steaming instead of crisping, so cook in batches if necessary.
Give the tenders a light spray with a low-calorie cooking spray. This tiny amount of oil is vital for achieving that desirable golden-brown color and extra crispiness. Air fry them for approximately 10 minutes, then carefully flip each tender, spray again, and continue cooking for another 10 minutes. They’re perfectly done when the juices run clear, and the meat is cooked all the way through. For assurance, you can always cut into the thickest part of a tender to check for doneness. The exact cooking time may vary slightly based on the size of your tenders and your specific air fryer model, so keep an eye on them.
While I adore this air frying method for its ease and fantastic results, I’m also a big fan of grilled chicken tenders, especially recipes like these flavorful Dr Pepper BBQ Chicken Tenders for a different flavor profile.

Serving Suggestions: Perfect Pairings for Your Chicken Tenders
The possibilities for serving these versatile air fryer chicken tenders are truly endless, making them a fantastic option for any meal. However, I have a few personal favorites that I highly recommend to complement their crispy texture and savory flavor. First and foremost, you absolutely need my quick homemade Honey Mustard Sauce. The recipe for this essential dipping sauce is conveniently included in the recipe card below – it’s a simple blend that brings out the best in the chicken.
For a fresh and vibrant side, my Rainbow Slaw with Lemon Garlic Tahini Dressing offers a delightful twist on traditional coleslaw. Its crisp vegetables and zesty dressing provide a wonderful contrast to the richness of the chicken, making it a perfect partner.
If you’re in the mood for something heartier, consider pairing your tenders with a classic potato salad, but with a twist. My delicious Dill Pickle Potato Salad offers a tangy, herbaceous flavor that cuts through the richness of the chicken beautifully. Alternatively, for a creamy pasta option, the Green Goddess Pasta Salad is always a hit, adding a refreshing and satisfying element to your meal. You won’t regret trying either of these!
Sometimes, though, simplicity reigns supreme. In those instances, I highly recommend serving these tenders with my zesty Korean Carrot Salad, which provides a bright, tangy kick, or a refreshing Summer Tomato and Cucumber Salad. Both offer light, crisp accompaniments that let the chicken tenders shine.

Equipment
- Air Fryer
Ingredients
For the Chicken Tenders
- 1kg / 2 lbs skinless boneless chicken breasts, cut into strips
- 1 tsp salt
- 10 crackers/ 1 cup Ryvita crackers, to make up 1 cup/85g crumbs
- 1 tbsp sesame seeds
- 1/2 tsp dried basil
- 1/2 tsp dried oregano
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp sweet paprika
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1 tsp oil (for spraying)
For Honey Mustard Sauce
- 2 tbsp honey
- 2 tbsp whole grain mustard
- 2 tbsp mayonnaise
- 1/2-1 tsp white wine vinegar
Instructions
- Place Ryvita crackers in a food processor and pulse until fine crumbs are formed. Alternatively, you can place the crackers in a sturdy Ziploc bag and crush them by hand using a rolling pin. Transfer the crumbs to a medium bowl and mix thoroughly with sesame seeds, dried basil, dried oregano, sweet paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
- Cut the chicken breasts into uniform strips and lightly sprinkle with 1 tsp of salt. In a separate medium bowl, beat the egg. Dunk each chicken tender into the beaten egg mixture, ensuring it’s fully coated, then transfer to the crumb mixture. Press the chicken firmly into the crumbs to ensure an even, generous coating on all sides. Shake off any excess crumbs and arrange the coated tenders in a single layer on the air fryer rack or in the basket, being careful not to overcrowd. Lightly spray the tenders with a low-calorie cooking spray. Air fry for 10 minutes at 375°F (190°C), then flip the tenders, spray again, and continue cooking for another 10 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through. The chicken is done when the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C) and the juices run clear. (Note: Exact cooking times may vary based on the thickness of your chicken tenders and your specific air fryer model.)
- While the chicken tenders are cooking, prepare the honey mustard sauce. In a small bowl, combine the honey, whole grain mustard, mayonnaise, and white wine vinegar. Whisk until smooth and well combined. Taste and adjust the amount of vinegar to your preference for tanginess. Transfer the sauce to a serving dish and serve alongside the hot, crispy air fryer chicken tenders.
Notes
- The exact timing may vary depending on the size of your chicken tenders and the brand of your air fryer. Always ensure chicken is cooked to an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).
- You can use any type of whole-grain crackers as a substitute for Ryvita crackers.
- For variations in texture and flavor, substitute sesame seeds with chopped sunflower seeds, poppy seeds, or simply omit them if preferred.
