Few outside the realm of adventure sports enthusiasts consider Scandinavia a prime family vacation spot. This perception, however, couldn’t be further from the truth.

The local communities of Idre, Särna, and Grövelsjön are small, charming, and geared towards self-sufficiency and outdoor living. They offer only the essentials: grocery stores stocked with local produce, petrol stations, and well-equipped outdoor gear shops. Indeed, as we journeyed further north, past Drevsjø, we reached a point where the resident reindeer population seemed to comfortably outnumber the human inhabitants, a truly wild and exhilarating experience.

The terrain itself is nothing short of stunning. Unending, dense forests blanket dramatic, rolling hills, creating a verdant tapestry that stretches as far as the eye can see. While we discovered some of the most incredibly beautiful and secluded beaches we’d ever encountered along these lake shores, we quickly learned that the water, though inviting, was decidedly brisk for swimming – even on the warmest summer days.

When deciding what to cook, resist the urge to simply recreate the dishes you enjoy at home. Local Swedish foods are often superior in quality and far better priced. Observe what locals are buying at the market or in the grocery store – they usually know best! Fortunately, the flavors of traditional Swedish cuisine are familiar and wonderfully comforting. Simple, hearty dishes like beef hash and classic waffles were enthusiastically devoured by our family, becoming instant favorites.

For those who enjoy a beverage, low-alcohol beer can be found readily in grocery stores. However, anything stronger, including wine and spirits, must be purchased from the official state-run stores known as Systembolaget. The selection there is impressively international, with a commendable focus on excellent Swedish lagers. Traditional Swedish liquors are also worth exploring; the classic aquavit offers a unique taste of Nordic tradition, and we stumbled upon a remarkable and potent elderflower liqueur, the name of which, regrettably, we failed to record, but whose memory lingers pleasantly.

The many lakes we encountered boasted some of the most breathtakingly beautiful beaches we’ve ever seen, made even more appealing by their almost complete emptiness. The water, even during the peak of summer, is bracingly cold. You might still enjoy the invigorating dip, but don’t expect to linger for extended periods. There’s a very good reason why these serene beaches are often thoughtfully equipped with firepits – perfect for warming up after a refreshing plunge!

The weather can be notoriously changeable, with temperatures dropping unexpectedly quickly, even in summer. Therefore, always ensure you enjoy the great outdoors equipped with appropriate gear and a sensible approach to safety and preparedness.
