The itinerary for this exclusive five-day food tour was meticulously crafted, promising an insightful exploration alongside a group of fellow journalists and bloggers. Our journey was perfectly split, offering a captivating contrast: three days immersed in the rustic charm of Røros, followed by two days in the vibrant, cosmopolitan capital of Oslo. For those seeking a true disconnect from the pressures of daily life and the relentless grip of technology, Røros is an idyllic sanctuary. After three incredibly enriching days in Røros, we boarded a comfortable train and journeyed south, heading towards Norway’s dynamic capital, Oslo. While I had spent a day in Oslo on a previous trip, I quickly realized that this visit would offer an entirely new perspective. The scenic train ride itself was a treat, showcasing Norway’s diverse landscapes as we transitioned from the rugged interior to the more populated coastal regions, building anticipation for the city ahead.
A Grand Welcome: Oslo’s Modern Edge
Our arrival at Oslo Gardermoen Airport was anything but ordinary. We were greeted by an impromptu opera performance from members of the esteemed Oslo Opera House, transforming a typical airport arrival into an unexpected cultural spectacle. This moment immediately triggered a “Dorothy, you are not in Kansas anymore” realization. The airport itself, a marvel of state-of-the-art design and efficiency, coupled with the effortlessly chic, well-dressed crowd exuding distinct Scandi style, sharply contrasted with the simpler, rural charm of Røros we had just departed. Oslo immediately presented itself as a sophisticated, modern, and forward-thinking metropolis.
Indeed, almost everything about Oslo felt different. Our hotel in Røros embraced a rustic aesthetic, fostering a connection to nature with its wooden beds and cozy wool blankets. In stark contrast, our accommodation in Oslo was decidedly modern, boasting the cutting-edge, minimalist look for which Scandinavian design is globally renowned. However, with an exciting city waiting to be explored, spending too much time in the hotel was never an option! Our time in Oslo was set to fast-forward—an exhilarating yet wonderfully exhausting whirlwind of discovery. Every place we visited, every experience we had, made me wish we could prolong the moment, but there was simply too much to see, experience, eat, and drink!
Oslo’s Culinary and Cultural Heartbeat
Our first full day in Oslo kicked off with a visit to Matstreif, Norway’s most renowned annual food festival. This vibrant event transformed a central area of Oslo into a buzzing hub of gastronomic delight. We had the incredible opportunity to interview some of the country’s most innovative producers and, of course, taste their exceptional goods. For a country with a relatively small population of around five million, it’s truly astounding how frequently Norwegian producers earn top prizes in global food competitions. This speaks volumes about their commitment to quality, purity, and innovation in the culinary arts.
The sun shone brightly, illuminating the lively festival grounds, where the air was filled with delicious aromas and cheerful chatter. That Friday was shaping up to be an unforgettable day, but our itinerary was packed. After soaking in the festival atmosphere, we were off to a fascinating tour of a local beer brewery, where we learned about Norway’s growing craft beer scene and tasted some unique local brews.
A Nobel Experience at Ekebergrestauranten
As if we hadn’t indulged enough, our day culminated in an exquisite dinner at the swanky Ekebergrestauranten, perched elegantly atop a hill overlooking Oslo’s gorgeous waterfront. The meal itself was truly unforgettable, a symphony of flavors and textures, but what elevated the experience to something truly extraordinary was sharing the space with members of the Nobel Prize Committee and a number of distinguished laureates. Our gracious host, Kirsti from Visit Oslo, who previously worked for the Nobel Peace Prize Foundation, provided us with an insider’s guide to the luminaries at the various tables. Being in such close proximity to individuals who have contributed so profoundly and positively to the world was absolutely thrilling; it made me feel as if I were in the presence of royalty, a truly humbling and inspiring moment.

There are countless more stories and observations I could share from my incredible journey through Norway, but if I were to sum up this remarkable country in a single phrase, it would be “onward looking.” Norway is a nation that deeply treasures its rich past and traditions, yet it is never afraid to embrace the future, continually reinventing itself while drawing strength from its roots and profound history. This balance is evident everywhere you look, creating a truly unique national identity that captivates every visitor.
This harmonious blend is evident in its diverse offerings, from quaint, candle-lit inns adorned with animal furs and hosts in traditional national garb, to bustling, hip street markets in Oslo offering an array of global street food. You can venture onto remote hiking trails, often shared with abundant wildlife, or marvel at the state-of-the-art, futuristic architectural wonders that define its urban skylines, such as the iconic Oslo Opera House. Norway has mastered the art of combining all aspects of life, learning from each, rather than favoring one over the other.
