Unveiling the Real Me: Behind the Scenes of Vikalinka’s Food Photography and Life

After a year and a half of passionately sharing recipes, culinary stories, and beautiful food photography on Vikalinka, many of you might feel like you know me quite well. Or so I believed. It wasn’t until my dear friend, Noemi, visited and offered a fresh perspective that I truly began to reconsider. Her insightful comment – “You need to show your readers who you really are! People would absolutely love to see the person behind the camera” – initially sparked a wave of reluctance within me. Why the hesitation? It was difficult to pinpoint, but perhaps I had become comfortably nestled behind the “Vikalinka” persona, and the thought of revealing the true ‘Julia’ felt unexpectedly vulnerable.

The Creative Spark: A Shoot of a Shoot

Noemi, an incredibly talented photographer herself, then presented an utterly brilliant idea: a “shoot of a shoot.” She proposed documenting my process as I prepared for a typical food blog post, capturing all the intricate details from concept to final photograph. The notion was inspired, a chance to truly pull back the curtain on the often-unseen aspects of food blogging. Faced with such a creative and compelling proposition, how could I possibly decline? It was, in essence, an offer I simply couldn’t refuse, though thankfully, no dramatic measures were involved!

Beyond the Blog: Getting to Know Julia

So, here it goes: my name is Julia. While I’ve never consciously concealed this fact, the endearing habit many readers have of calling me “Vikalinka” or “Vika” makes it worth clarifying. When I’m not immersed in the delightful world of cooking, styling, and photographing food for this blog, my life is a vibrant tapestry woven with other equally fulfilling roles. My greatest companion and best friend, who consistently fills my days with laughter, is my husband. Together, we are navigating the beautiful chaos of raising our two wonderful children. A significant portion of my week is also dedicated to my professional work, which I genuinely enjoy: I am a teacher by day.

This multifaceted existence means that, despite the curated perfection you might see on my blog, you and I likely have a surprising amount in common. While I do occasionally indulge in the creation of elaborate, fancy cakes – a true joy for special occasions – the reality for most evenings is far more practical. My family’s schedule dictates that I prioritize quick, healthy, and delicious dinners. Life often unfolds at an insane pace, a relentless pursuit of keeping up with daily demands and seizing every precious moment. Between being a dedicated mom, a supportive wife, a passionate teacher, and an active food blogger, time for “myself” in the conventional sense can feel scarce.

Yet, upon deeper reflection, that sentiment isn’t entirely accurate. Each of these roles – motherhood, partnership, teaching, and blogging – are not separate entities consuming my time; they are, in fact, integral pieces that form the mosaic of who I am. They define me, enrich me, and challenge me in the most rewarding ways. I wholeheartedly embrace and cherish the life I’ve built, finding immense joy and satisfaction in every facet of it. This journey has been unexpected, exhilarating, and profoundly fulfilling, proving that authenticity lies not in narrowing one’s identity but in embracing its beautiful breadth.

The Reality of a “Glamorous” Food Blog Location

I am often asked about my seemingly “exotic” location here in England, and this question invariably brings a smile to my face. Partially, it’s because any place, no matter how charming, tends to lose a bit of its initial magic after you’ve lived there for a while. But mostly, it’s because my “exotic” backdrop is far less thrilling in its everyday reality than some might imagine. My English garden, where I frequently set up my outdoor shots, is, to put it mildly, about the size of a postage stamp. This compact space often presents unique creative challenges.

For instance, when I’m capturing images, I frequently find myself with no room to step back and gain perspective. This necessitates adopting some rather unconventional and often comical body contortions, bending myself into incredible shapes to avoid bumping into furniture, walls, or other miscellaneous objects – including that humble shed lurking in the corner of my tiny garden. The quest for that perfect angle often involves yoga-like flexibility and a good dose of humor. It’s a stark contrast to the sprawling, perfectly manicured outdoor studios one might envision. The reality of food photography at home is a testament to working with what you have, transforming the ordinary into something visually appealing through sheer will and creative problem-solving.

Finding Beauty in the Everyday: Vikalinka’s Core Philosophy

Indeed, the day-to-day reality of my life is often far more prosaic, more grounded, than the enchanting, sometimes idealized world presented by Vikalinka. However, there’s another profound reality I choose to embrace and observe daily. This is the reality of incredible beauty that subtly surrounds us, regardless of our geographical location or the grandeur of our surroundings. It’s the beauty inherent in God’s creation, manifested in the simplest yet most magnificent forms.

This beauty can be found in the golden crust of a freshly baked loaf of artisanal bread, its warmth radiating comfort. It’s in the rich, creamy texture of freshly churned farmhouse butter, a testament to traditional craft. It’s in the complex, inviting aroma of an aged cheese, telling tales of time and care. Or perhaps it’s in the simple elegance of a large cluster of juicy grapes, glistening with natural sweetness. These everyday wonders are what truly inspire me. I am fortunate to be surrounded by such beauty every single day, and it’s this perspective that fuels my passion for Vikalinka – to capture and share these delightful moments of culinary artistry and natural elegance with all of you.
